Top Five Accessible Beaches in New Zealand

Last week we covered some great accessible places to travel around the world. We covered some great beaches in Australia! So this week we're going to check out some great accessible beaches in NZ

It’s summertime, and one of the best things about summer is going to the beach! Enjoying the fresh breeze and the feel of the cool water. It’s the ultimate way to relax, and thanks to beaches rolling out matting and products like the Beach Wheelchair, it’s something that everybody can enjoy!

The beach access mat is a portable rollout mat designed to help wheelchair users traverse the sand, and get down to the beach. It’s sturdy and visible, and we think it’s just the greatest idea! With more and more beaches rolling them out every year, it’s easier to get out and about and enjoy the holidays in comfort and style!

New Zealand is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and they’re definitely worth a visit. Whether you call New Zealand home, or you’re travelling for the holidays. We’ve done the research to find out which beaches are the best accessible beaches in New Zealand, so let’s check them out!

#1 Mount Maunganui

With gorgeous views, boardwalks along the beachfront and accessible accommodation nearby, this beach is definitely our top choice. Located in the Bay of Plenty, this beach was the first to roll out beach matting in New Zealand back in 2017. There’s even beach wheelchairs and an accessible beach buggy for hire through the Tauranga Council (you can hire them for any of the nearby beaches!). Their beach matting stretches all the way from the dunes to the water! So, you can enjoy this breathtaking beach with your family!

#2 Days Bay

Just in time for the summer, Hutt City Council have just launched their beach matting on the 4th of December. It’s available all the way until March! Only a half hour drive (or an hour on public transport) from Wellington, this beach is a great choice. Especially considering Wellington is a nicely flat city, easy to traverse and full of accessible facilities. Days Bay is an absolutely lovely beach to visit, so why not head out and check it out for yourself?

#3 Pilot Bay

Pilot Bay is a breathtaking beach, and a wonderful location to spend your day. Sheltered from the open ocean and overlooked by Mount Maunganui (or Mauao), it’s an absolutely stellar location if you want a calm and peaceful beach to visit. With beach access mats rolled out between December and March as well as lovely calm waters, it’s absolutely perfect. Go on down and have a barbeque, head down near the water. Enjoy the tranquility!

Beach wheelchairs are an amazing product, helping to make a day on the beach possible for everyone! With a range of different products to choose from, it’s a no-brainer! That tricky sand is no longer an obstacle with products like the Observer Beach wheelchair, or the Heartway Beach Wheelchair!

The beaches around Christchurch and the greater Canterbury Region are a must see if you’re travelling New Zealand; they are absolutely breathtaking. You can hire beach wheelchairs to use on any beach in the region. So let’s take a look at some of these beaches!

#4 Waimairi Beach

Translating as “listless stream”, this beach is the perfect place to enjoy. Located just east of the park lands and only a twenty minute drive from Christchurch itself, why not take a beach wheelchair down there and explore?

#5 Sumner Beach

This beach is also just a twenty minute drive from Christchurch and with astounding views of Tuawera (or Cave Rock) it’s a stunning place to visit, especially if you can take your beach wheelchair down there! You could even make a day of visiting all the beaches in the area. Take in the wonderful sights, peace and tranquility.

We hope that we’ve helped you decide on which beaches you’d like to visit in New Zealand this summer. If you do decide to go, we’d love to see pictures!
