How Fast Does A Mobility Scooter Go?

For many people, mobility scooters are their main mode of transport. So, how fast does a mobility scooter go?

Australian law dictates that a mobility scooter or electric wheelchair must not be able to exceed 10km/hr on flat ground. This is because mobility scooter and electric wheelchair users are considered pedestrians under Australian law. If a mobility scooter or electric wheelchair is capable of exceeding this, it would be classed as a vehicle instead.

As an example, here is an article about a man in the Northern Territory who was stopped by police. He had recently bought a modification for his wheelchair, and police deemed it illegal. Because of this device which attached to his wheelchair, his wheelchair was able to go up to 25km/hr.

Other countries may have different laws surrounding the speed that mobility scooters can go. So, if you are not living in Australia it is best to check your local laws regarding mobility scooters.
